TomoTherapy Honors National Cancer Survivors Day, Expands Survivor Profile Series
MADISON, Wis – June 5, 2009 – TomoTherapy Incorporated (NASDAQ: TOMO) is joining America’s 12 million cancer survivors, to observe the 22nd annual National Cancer Survivors Day® on Sunday, June 7, 2009. TomoTherapy is advancing cancer care with the Hi·Art® treatment system, an innovative cancer care platform that integrates CT imaging and the helical delivery of intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT). TomoTherapy is committed to better patient outcomes, both through their groundbreaking radiation therapy solution and a dedication to educating cancer patients on the options available to them.
National Cancer Survivors Day is an annual, worldwide Celebration of Life held in hundreds of communities throughout the United States, Canada, and other countries. Participants unite in a symbolic event to show the world that life after a cancer diagnosis can be a reality.
“The original vision of TomoTherapy at its most basic level was to help cancer patients become cancer survivors,” said Rock Mackie, Ph.D., co-founder and chairman of TomoTherapy. “Our solution was designed to offer an improved treatment option for many, including those with few (if any) other options left available to them. We, at TomoTherapy, see National Cancer Survivors Day as an opportunity to celebrate life. We are committed to educating people with cancer about new technologies that exist and to remind them that cancer is not the end, but the beginning, of a journey—and that you are not alone.”
In honor of cancer survivors everywhere, TomoTherapy is featuring personal stories of survivors who have discovered the benefits of TomoTherapy treatment on their own. Watch these hopeful videos and read the stories to see how people have found power and strength in their cancer treatment choices. TomoVideo, the company’s online video channel, now includes an in-depth interview with Dr. Mary Barnhart, a Portland, Ore.-based breast cancer surgeon turned cancer survivor.
After being diagnosed with advanced endometrial cancer and undergoing surgery and chemotherapy, Dr. Barnhart learned of TomoTherapy through extensive research on the best radiation option to fit her diet and lifestyle. She sought out TomoTherapy treatments at Meridian Park Radiation Oncology Center in Portland. “(TomoTherapy) was something that I truly needed to find,” said Dr. Barnhart. “I found something that was perfect for me, and to know that it worked was just the best.”
Dr. Barnhart’s full video testimonial is available on TomoTherapy’s TomoVideo.
Laurens Pierce III is another such survivor. As a late stage prostate cancer patient Laurens feared the results his treatment would have on his life and worried about debilitating side effects. He never imagined he could remain active while undergoing treatment. “During the whole time I was receiving TomoSM treatments I never missed work. Never had a side effect,” said Laurens Pierce. “I drove 100 miles to the clinic every day and came back to work….I never even missed my Sunday golf!”
