TomoTherapy Inc. and Kirloskar Bring State-of-the-Art Cancer Care to Tata Memorial in India
Tata Memorial Centre, Advanced Centre for Treatment, Research & Education in Cancer (ACTREC) will be the first hospital in India to install the TomoTherapy® Hi∙Art System®
Cancer patients in India will soon gain access to an advanced technology that allows for greater accuracy and precision in radiation therapy. TomoTherapy Inc. announced today that they are teaming up with Kirloskar Theratronics (P) Ltd. (KTPL) to distribute the TomoTherapy® Hi∙Art System® throughout India and surrounding countries. KTPL, part of the highly respected Kirloskar Group, provides radiotherapy equipment and solutions to India, serving about 250 current radiotherapy installations across the country.
KTPL is facilitating installation at Tata Memorial Centre, which will be the first TomoTherapy Hi∙Art System in India. The Tata Memorial Centre is a Comprehensive Cancer Care Centre established in 1941. It is a Grant-in-Aid Institution of India’s Department of Atomic Energy and remains a pioneer in providing state-of-the-art treatment options for patients.
Dr. K.A. Dinshaw, the Director of Tata Memorial Centre, is a recipient of one of the highest civilian awards of India—Padam Shri. She is also an advisor to the World Health Organization (WHO). “The concept of radiotherapy treatment using the TomoTherapy Hi∙Art System is unique,” said Dr. Dinshaw. “The image guidance and 360 degree radiation delivery capabilities of the system provide the opportunity to treat difficult and select cases, where other treatment devices would have distinct limitations.”
“The radiotherapy community in India is well qualified and experienced to learn new technologies such as TomoTherapy,” added Dr. K.R. Singh, Chairman and Managing Director of Kirloskar. “Cancer is the second largest cause of death in India. It is estimated that 700,000 to 900,000 new cancer cases will be diagnosed each year. The WHO estimates that India needs 1000 radiotherapy units to fulfill the future treatment demand; currently the country has about 400.”
Dr. Fred Robertson, CEO of TomoTherapy Inc., said these figures speak to the rapid growth the company is experiencing. “This is yet another major milestone for TomoTherapy Inc. We’re honored to partner with such respected institutions as Kirloskar and Tata Memorial in bringing the Hi∙Art System with CTrue™ technology to the people of India.”
The Hi∙Art System will be installed at Tata Memorial Centre within the next six months.
