Grupo IMO of Madrid Hosts International Symposium on TomoTherapy® Radiation Treatments
Fundación Grupo IMO—the scientific and non-profit branch of the Oncology Institute of Madrid—recently hosted an international symposium on “New Horizons in Cancer Treatment: TomoTherapy.” Sponsored by the Ramón Areces Foundation, the two-day symposium was held on November 23 – 24, 2006, and brought together experts from across the US and Europe to discuss technical and clinical experiences with the TomoTherapy® Hi·Art System®, as well as new and recent developments in image guidance, stereotactic body radiotherapy, and adaptive radiotherapy.

The symposium opened with presentations by Mr. Federico Mayor Zaragoza, President of the Scientific Board of Fundación Ramón Areces and former Director-General of UNESCO; José María Segovia de Arana, Scientific Advisor for the Fundación Ramón Areces; José Samblás, President of Grupo IMO and symposium Coordinator; and Ana Mañas, President of the Sociedad Española de Oncología Radioterápica (SEOR). In addition, Dr. Gustavo Olivera, Vice President of Research at TomoTherapy Inc. and Adjunct Associate Professor at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, presented on “TomoTherapy: Technical aspects and work in progress.” Other distinguished presenters and moderators included:

Grupo IMO is the first facility in Spain to offer TomoTherapy® radiation treatments, treating patients on the Hi·Art System® since April 2006. Established in 1991, Grupo IMO has the largest autonomous network of seven reference centers for cancer treatment using radiotherapy and radiosurgery techniques in Spain.
