Frederick A. Robertson, MD, MBA President and Chief Executive Officer
Frederick A. Robertson, MD has served as our Chief Executive Officer and a director since joining the company in January 2005, and as President since January 2008. Prior to joining TomoTherapy Inc., Dr. Robertson served as an Assistant Professor of Anesthesiology at the Medical College of Wisconsin from 2000 through 2004. From 1998 to 2000, Dr. Robertson served as President and Chief Executive Officer of GE Marquette Medical Systems, and later as Chief Clinical Officer of GE Medical Systems. Dr. Robertson previously held management positions with Marquette Medical Systems, including President and Chief Executive Officer, President-Patient Monitoring Division and Medical Director. Dr. Robertson also serves as a director of the University of Wisconsin Foundation and Access Genetics, LLC, a molecular diagnostics and interpretation company. Dr. Robertson has an MBA from San Diego State University and an MD from the University of Wisconsin Medical School.
Thomas Rockwell Mackie, PhD Co-founder, Chairman of the Board
Thomas Rockwell Mackie, PhD co-founded our company in 1997 and has served as Chairman of our Board of Directors since 1999. Dr. Mackie also served as President of TomoTherapy Inc. from 1997 until 1999 and as Treasurer from 1997 until 2000. Since 1987, Dr. Mackie has been a professor in the departments of Medical Physics and Human Oncology at the University of Wisconsin, where he established the TomoTherapy research program. Dr. Mackie also co-founded Geometrics Corporation (now merged with ADAC Corp.), which developed a radiotherapy treatment planning system. Dr. Mackie currently serves as President of the Medical Physics Foundation, and as a member on the boards of Cellectar Inc., a drug development company, Bioionix Inc., a water treatment company, and the University of Wisconsin-Madison Calibration Laboratory. Dr. Mackie has a BSc in Physics from the University of Saskatchewan and a PhD in Physics from the University of Alberta in Edmonton.
Thomas E. Powell, BS, MBA Chief Financial Officer & Treasurer
Thomas E. Powell joined TomoTherapy as our Chief Financial Officer and Treasurer in June 2009. Prior to joining us, Mr. Powell served in 2008 as Chief Financial Officer of Textura Corporation, a web-based software company. From 2001 to 2008, Mr. Powell served as the Executive Vice President, Treasurer and Chief Financial Officer of Midway Games, Inc., a gaming software development company. Prior to joining Midway Games, Mr. Powell served in a variety of roles with Dade Behring Holdings (now Siemens Diagnostics), including: vice president, Acquisitions and Strategic Planning; vice president, finance, for the Biology Products Division; and director of Corporate Financial Planning. Previously, he held financial positions at PepsiCo, Inc., Bain and Company, Inc., and Tenneco Corporation. Mr. Powell began his career as an auditor with Arthur Andersen & Co. Mr. Powell earned a Bachelor’s degree in accounting from Pennsylvania State University and a CPA license before graduating with an MBA from the University of Chicago.
Kenneth D. Buroker, BS, PE Vice President of Regulatory Affairs and Quality
Kenneth D. Buroker joined TomoTherapy as Director of Regulatory Affairs and Quality in 2000, and in 2005, he was appointed Vice President, Regulatory Affairs and Quality. Prior to joining us, Mr. Buroker
served from 1996 to 2000 as Director of Regulatory Affairs of Lunar Corporation (now GE Medical Systems), a manufacturer of Bone Densitometry equipment. Prior to that, from 1989 to 1996, Mr. Buroker served in Regulatory and Standards management positions with Ohmeda, Inc. (now GE Medical Systems), a manufacturer of anesthesia systems and monitors. Mr. Buroker has a BS in Electrical Engineering from the University of Wisconsin, and is a registered Professional Engineer in the state of Wisconsin.
Delwin T. Coufal, BS, MBA Vice President of Marketing
Delwin T. Coufal has served as our Vice President of Marketing since joining us in April, 2005. Prior to that, Mr. Coufal served from 2003 to 2005 as Vice President of Marketing of VIASYS Healthcare, a medical technology company. From 2001 to 2003, Mr. Coufal served as CEO of Appleton Cardiology Associates, S.C., a cardiology healthcare services provider, from 1996 to 2001 as General Manager with GE Healthcare/Marquette Medical, and from 1990 to 1996 as Marketing Product Manager with Ohmeda, Inc. (now GE Medical Systems), a manufacturer of anesthesia systems and monitors. Mr. Coufal has a BS in Biomedical Engineering from Duke University and an MBA from the University of Michigan.
Brenda S. Furlow, JD Vice President, Secretary and General Counsel
Brenda Furlow, J.D., currently serves as Vice President, General Counsel, and Corporate Secretary, a role she assumed in August 2008, after serving as Associate General Counsel since May 2007. For the nine years before joining TomoTherapy, Ms. Furlow was Vice President, General Counsel and Corporate Secretary for Promega Corporation, a Wisconsin-based biotechnology company. Ms. Furlow has broad experience in a variety of legal areas, including intellectual property, technology licensing, employment, securities, international distribution, and general corporate and contract law. Ms. Furlow earned a law degree with honors from the University of Chicago in 1987. Ms. Furlow is a member of the state bars in Illinois and Wisconsin.
Shawn D. Guse, JD Chief Executive Officer, CPAC
Shawn Guse, J.D., has served as Chief Executive Officer of Compact Particle Acceleration Corporation (CPAC), a spinout of TomoTherapy Inc., since April 2008. In conjunction with Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL), CPAC is developing and commercializing a highly compact proton therapy system powered by a dielectric-wall accelerator (DWA), a revolutionary proton accelerator that has a substantially smaller structure and greater flexibility than other systems. Prior to assuming his current role with CPAC, Mr. Guse acted as TomoTherapy’s Vice President of International Operations from January to October, 2009, Vice President of Global Sales from August to December 2008, and General Counsel and Corporate Secretary, from July 2005 to August 2008. Before joining TomoTherapy, Mr. Guse for several large law firms. His background includes substantial experience in growing high-technology companies, structuring and executing corporate sales and acquisitions, debt and equity financing, technology licensing and transfer, employment matters, and international distribution and sales. Mr. Guse has a B.A. in Economics from the University of Wisconsin — Milwaukee and a J.D. from the University of Wisconsin Law School.
Gustavo Hugo Olivera, PhD Vice President of Research
Gustavo H. Olivera has served as our Vice President of Research since 2005. Dr. Gustavo Olivera joined the TomoTherapy research group in 1997. Currently an Adjunct Professor at the Department of Medical Physics of the University of Wisconsin, Dr. Olivera has worked as professor and researcher in institutions around the world, including the Physics Institute of Rosario (IFIR), Argentina; National Council of Science (CONICET), Argentina; Secondary Laboratory of Dosimetry, Atomic Energy Agency of Argentina (CNEA); Instituto Balseiro and Centro Atomico Bariloche, Atomic Energy Agency of Argentina (CNEA); Centre Interdisciplinaire de Recherches avec les Ions Lourds (CIRIL), French Atomic Energy Agency (CEA) and National Council of Science of France (CNRS); International Center for Theoretical Physics (ICTP), Trieste, Italy. Dr. Olivera earned his Licenciado in Physics and his Ph.D. in Atomic Physics from the National University of Rosario, Argentina.
Paul J. Pienkowski, BS, Vice President of Product Development
Paul J. Pienkowski joined TomoTherapy in March 2008 as Vice President of Product Development. Previously, from 2004 to 2008, Mr. Pienkowski served as Vice President of Product Innovation for the NeuroCare division of VIASYS Healthcare/Cardinal Health. From 1987 to 2004, Mr. Pienkowski held a number of positions during his tenure at GE Healthcare (Datex-Ohmeda division, a manufacturer of life support systems and vital signs monitors), including: General Manager of Global Engineering; Director of Platform Development; Manager of Software Development; and Manager of Product Development. Mr. Pienkowski has BS degrees in Computer Science and Mathematics from the University of Wisconsin – LaCrosse.
Eric A. Schloesser, BS Vice President of Operations and Business Development
Eric A. Schloesser has served as our Vice President of Operations and Business Development since October 2009. Mr. Schloesser joined the University of Wisconsin TomoTherapy research group in 1996, becoming one of the first employees of TomoTherapy Inc. when the company was formed in 1997. Holding a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Wisconsin, Mr. Schloesser served as a Software/Electrical Engineer, Hardware Program Manager, System Engineering Manager and Director of Product Development. Before assuming his current role, Mr. Schloesser served as Vice President of Business Development from March 2008 to October 2009, and Vice President of Product Development from 2005 to 2008.
Alison Sparks, SPHR Vice President of Human Resources
Alison Sparks has over 20 years of business experience in areas that include marketing, communications, and human resources. Previous HR positions include Senior Vice President, Human Resources at Arc Worldwide, a division of the Publicis Groupe Communications Network, and most recently as the lead HR officer for the Marketing division within Discover Financial Services. Ms. Sparks served as an Human Resources consultant to TomoTherapy Inc. during 2005, helping shape the company’s early workforce planning and leadership development tools, before joining the company as Vice President of Human Resources in 2006. Ms. Sparks holds a BA from Drake University, as well as a Senior Professional in Human Resources (SPHR) certification.
Richard Springer, BS, MBA Vice President of Customer Support
Richard Springer came to TomoTherapy Inc. in 2005 with over 20 years of experience in field service. Mr. Springer continues to develop global infrastructure, building a comprehensive and effective field service and customer support capability for the company. Mr. Springer holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Electronics Engineering Technology from the DeVry Institute of Technology, and an MBA from Nova Southeastern University.
Ralph Vaello Chief Commercial Officer
Ralph Vaello serves as Chief Commercial Officer, a role he assumed in October 2009 after joining TomoTherapy Inc. as Vice President of Global Sales in December 2008. Mr. Vaello joined TomoTherapy with more than 15 years of experience in the oncology and imaging industries. Prior to joining us, Mr. Vaello spent seven years leading the sales and field marketing group for Philips Healthcare’s Oncology Imaging division. Mr. Vaello also previously served as Director, Global Sales Manager, for Marconi Medical Systems’ Oncology division. Prior to that, he held various imaging and oncology sales positions for Picker International.
