The Beamlet
It’s not about the pretty pictures. In IGRT, it’s what you can do with—and expect from—the pictures you acquire that matter most. That’s why we designed the TomoTherapy® Hi·Art System® to incorporate CTrue™ —the only imaging technology that lets you see true position with every patient, every day.
When you think about it, CT technology is used as a tool in the diagnosis of cancer. It’s also used for the delineation of targets and organs at risk. Finally, a CT scan is used to generate the patient’s treatment plan.
So, the integration of CT technology into daily IGRT is a natural step in the evolution of advanced radiotherapy. It is this very integration that affords TomoTherapy Hi·Art system users the ability to confidently treat tumors and avoid critical structures with a very high degree of accuracy and conformality.
Based on a true CT design which uses a rigid ring gantry with a narrow beam CT detector (the same design as a conventional CT), the Hi·Art System has a mechanical isocenter accuracy of < 0.75 mm and a couch positioning accuracy of ± 1.0 mm, all focused with a single image and delivery source. This means you can acquire efficient daily CT images, including highly accurate pixel positions, with no calibration of imaging vs. treatment geometry required.
And with the Hi·Art System, you can scan just the area you are interested in—up to ~50 cm in length in the superior-inferior direction—in one pass, all with a consistently low imaging dose (typically 1–2.5 cGy, depending on the slice thickness you select).

Note: This is the first of three Beamlets that will address key points from our ASTRO introduction of CTrue. Stay tuned for more on true density, dose and delivery, and click here for a CTrue overview.
